Keep it simple
The simplest of murder mystery party games is where, in a group of at least ten people, there is a killer and a detective secretly selected. People are looking to each other and the killer winks their eye to make a "hit".
When the killer winks their eye at somebody, then that person shouts: "Dead!" and if the killer winks to the detective, then they are arrested. The murderer who kills the most people wins these murder mystery party games.
There is another very simple murder mystery game that can be repeated as many times as you like and would need average a minimum of ten people. A killer, a detective and a doctor are picked out in secret. Everybody shuts their eyes and a narrator tells a story something like:
"In the village of Eerieville, John was having dinner. Suddenly he was thrown out of the window and was grievously wounded..."
Then the narrator says to the killer to open the eyes and to pick up someone to kill. He closes his eyes again and says to the doctor to open their eyes and to guess who the victim is and save them. If the doctor doesn't guess who the victim is, then the detective opens their eyes and tries to guess who the killer is. If they fail, then the victim dies and is eliminated and the narrator carries on the story and the killer picks another victim.
If the policeman guesses who the killer is before being killed, then the detective wins. If the murderer kills the detective, then he or she wins the game.
Variations may apply to these murder mystery party games.
How to host Murder Mystery parties
In order to host a murder mystery party, usually there are some steps to follow. You may want to wear costumes and speak and act as one of the characters of the game. When the guests arrive, greet them in character and hand them the instructions, game kit or materials needed for the game.
The players have to introduce themselves to each other, also in character. Distribute the clues during the game, not all at once. Some clues are meant to be revealed or to be hinted and some are meant to be for your eyes only.
Solving the case
First, you invite the guests to give their versions of how the murder or the action took place, when, why and how. Finally, you reveal the real facts of the case and provide the answers.
You may want to decorate the place in keeping with the theme. Take pictures of the players during the game and show them to the rest of the players during the game or after the game, or upload them to FaceBook or Flickr for everybody to share the memories.
